


The Community Plantation of Kessaru & Payam Trees was facilitated by BDU under Catalytic Development Programme (CDP) scheme of Sericulture Department in convergence with NREGS, and was conducted at Birsiek Village in September 2015.
Birsiek village falls under Umsning C&RD Block and is about 70 km from the District Head Quarter, Nongpoh. The main occupation of the people is agriculture and livestock. Sericulture related activities such as rearing of eri silk worm, spinning and handloom is also popular among the people. The Basin Development Unit (BDU) in collaboration with the farmers club of the village took the initiative to intervene in the enhancement of sericulture mission and the propagation of Mission Green in the village.
The Plantation of Kessaru & Payam trees in Birsiek village was done on the 16th September, 2015. 1000 nos. of saplings (700 Kessaru & 300 saplings of Payam) were planted at designated gardens and areas in the village.
Before the plantation started, the participating community members were gathered together and were given specific instructions on planting and subsequent maintenance. Each sapling is to be taken care of by the household in whose garden the sapling is planted.
Follow up plan
The Enterprise Facilitation Centre will periodically monitor the maintenance and nurturing of the saplings that had been planted and provide necessary guidance to ensure the survival rate of the saplings is enhanced.
Training on advanced Eri silk worm rearing, natural dyeing and handloom will be arranged from time to time in collaboration with the Sericulture & Handloom Dept.
Depending on the survival rate, more saplings would be planted in the coming years
