COMMUNITY-BASED FOREST MANAGEMENT AND LIVELIHOOD IMPROVEMENT IN MEGHALAYA

The Community-based Forest Management and Livelihood Improvement in Meghalaya (MegLIFE) is a JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency) assisted project to be implemented in the State of Meghalaya. The objective of the project is to restore and conserve natural resources within the villages by sustainable forest management, livelihood improvement, and institutional strengthening, thereby contributing to the conservation of the environment, biodiversity, and uplifting of socio-economic conditions of people in the State of Meghalaya. The project is being executed by the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA).

PROJECT DURATION: The project duration starts from 13th October 2020 and it will continue till the next 10 years.

PROJECT COST: The entire cost of the project is estimated as 13,076 million Japanese Yen. Out of which 10,397 million Japanese Yen is to be covered by the loan for the Project.

TARGET AREAS: 500 villages in 22 blocks across all 11 districts of the state will be covered under the project.

EXPECTED OUTCOME:

SUSTAINABLE FOREST MANAGEMENT: Participatory Land Use Planning of 500 villages and restoration of degraded forest areas, including restoration of Natural Vegetation, barren land due to quarrying, shifting cultivation areas, enrichment plantation and improvement of corridors in the target villages areas. This component also envisages creation of community nurseries, soil and water conservation for forest management and constitution of community reserves.

COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT AND LIVELIHOOD IMPROVEMENT: Community mobilization and gender sensitization workshops will be organized and village level Village Project Implementation Committee (VPICs) will be formulated. Entry Point Activities will be undertaken in all 500 villages. 1000 Self Help Groups will be supported for undertaking 22 enterprises in the project areas. Micro-credit activities, Income Generation Activities (IGAs) and Enterprise Development Activities will be promoted through SHGs. Local level employment will be generated for construction of rainwater harvesting structure and drinking water tank.
