MEGHALAYA PROTECTION OF VULNERABLE CATCHEMENT AREAS
To tackle water security challenges and promote sustainable water resource management, Meghalaya's government introduced its Water Policy in 2019. The policy highlights the establishment of Water Resources Councils at various levels, including village, block, district, and state, to devise and execute plans for water security, micro-watershed, and catchment areas. Seeking assistance from KfW, the government has devised a project proposal to safeguard the Umiew catchment in East Khasi Hills (EKH) district and the Ganol catchment in West Garo Hills (WGH) district. These catchments supply water to the two major cities in the state: Shillong and Tura. The project aims to yield tangible outcomes, contributing to climate change adaptation and ensuring water, food, income, and livelihood security. It also strives to enhance forest cover and agricultural productivity in the region.
